Todays music industry is in transition.

The web is changing the music production dynamic. A good way to illustrate is in the juxtaposition between ‘classical’ and ‘pop’ production models; they represent two poles of thought.

Classical performers produce CDs to build a catalogue of music to support their live performance for which they charge exorbitant fees, CDs are used as promotional tools.

Pop music on the other hand do live performance to support their CD sales, live performance is used as a promotional tool.
With the advent of the web this dynamic for pop music is changing. The CD is being replaced by the download sites. The pay per downloads sites has made more music choices available to all and freed the artists from the record label’s mastications. However, there is still consumer resistance to the pay per download and many still prefer the free download or pirated music route. Although this has made for a wider availability of music it directly impacts the artists’ financial viability. Pirating has gone from ripping off the multi national record companies to ripping off the bands. In the face of declining or nonexistent sales bands are being forced to adopt the classical music model.

We have a choice, we can voluntarily make the pay per download the norm and support artists or we can have the free downloads. The latter will make the download a promotional tool and force bands to adopt the classical model and we can expect to pay exorbitant prices to see our favourite bands in live performance. A trend we are already seeing.

Live performance is the essence of music. There is no substitute for seeing and feeling the energy of the live show. If ticket prices start to reflect these existing trends, it will put the live shows out of the price range of many.

The music industry and governments are working on even more draconian copyright laws to regulate the web. If they succeed, we will once again return to limited choices of mainstream music and artists will once again fall under the yoke of their corporate sponsors. We need a voluntary movement to make this legislation redundant, we need to support our bands by supporting their pay per download sites and make pirated music a social stigma. By doing so we keep the ticket prices low so more can enjoy their favourite bands. There will still be voluntary free downloads from the underground and emerging artists trying to make their name.

The web is wide open, an industry in transition; the choices are ours.
